Desy Summer Students Registration Form

Qualifications:

Please take note that due to regulations for paid traineeships in Germany we can only accept students that are enrolled at their university for the whole period of the summerstudent programme.
Applicants should have completed, by the summer of , at least three years of full-time studies at university level in physics, related natural science disciplines or computing. The main target audiences are students who in summer 2022 are at the following two stages:

- they are about to obtain their Bachelor degree
- they have a Bachelor degree and are within the first year of studies for a Master degree.

Applicants who already obtained a master-degree or will obtain the master degree in 2022 are not accepted.
Applicants should not have previously been at DESY as a summer student.

Please note that all applicants should have a good working knowledge of English, some basic computing skills and are committed to attend the whole programme.

Duration and dates: The Summer student programme takes place from July 16 to September 5, 2022.
The students are expected to stay for the full period.

Documents to be uploaded: In the course of this application you will have to upload a few documents. The uploading is to be done on the second page of the application
(to which one gets after the validation check at the bottom of this page).
All documents are preferably in pdf format.

a CV (curriculum vitae), the CV should be in tabular form only and contain personal data, educational history / relevant work experience,
computing and other relevant work skills
(usually one or two pages are sufficient for the complete CV).
University grade certificates (e.g. bachelor certificate, credit points, etc.).

International Applicants from Non-EU and Non-EEA Countries need a working permission for Germany. To obtain the permission the following procedure is mandatory.
There are two documents needed.

1. The following Certificate of Enrollment has to be filled in and stamped and signed by your university:

It is very important that the whole period of the summer student program is covered and that you use this form.
So please state that your studies began before July 1st, 2022 and will continue at least until the 1st of October 2022.

2. A copy of your valid passport in English language.

Please upload both documents on the second page of the application form (which you reach after filling out this page).

The original Certificate of Enrollment has to be sent out to DESY after we have made the selection and you have received the email telling you that you have been accepted to the program. Please send it via courier to:

Please note that you need to ask your two referees for their permission before giving their names and email addresses in this online form.
The referees will get an automatic email notification with instructions where to upload their reference letters.

At the end of the online application procedure, you will be asked to confirm the correctness of the data you entered.

DESY Summer Students join groups engaged in the following activities:

Program A : Experiments with Synchrotron Radiation (only at Hamburg)
Students join photon science groups at DESY engaged in fundamental and applied research in the fields of physics, biology,
chemistry, crystallography, materials and geological science. Some of the students will work in the frame of the
European XFEL project. The work includes participation in activities like preparation and realization of measurements, evaluation
of measured data, and technical improvements of instrumentation.

A1. Solid-state physics and nanoscience (application oriented)
In the field of nanoscience and solid-state physics, students will get hands-on experience in growth of nanostructures ( thin films, nanoparticles) by molecular beam epitaxy and sputtering or the preparation of well-defined, ultra-clean surfaces. more Information
A2. Molecular sciences (application oriented)
Students join groups performing research in chemistry, biology and physics aiming at unraveling the structure-function relationship of molecular sciences. more Information
A3. Soft-matter sciences (application oriented)
Summer students will learn about modern methods to investigate the structure and dynamics of soft matter systems such as complex liquids and glasses. more Information
A4. Development of experimental techniques (methodology oriented)
Students join groups developing new experimental techniques in the field of photon science, including diffraction and scattering, spectroscopy, and imaging. more Information
A5. Lasers and optics (methodology oriented)
Students join groups in developing laser sources, measurement and diagnostics techniques and their applications. more Information
A6. Theory and computing
Theory problems addressed in photon science generally have a close connection to experimental applications or to the development of new methodologies for characterizing the properties of matter. more Information

Program B : Research in Elementary Particle Physics, astroparticle physics, accelerators and computing:

Experiments in Elementary Particle Physics and Astroparticle Physics: Research is concentrated on
ATLAS and CMS at the proton-proton-collider LHC,
the preparations for experiments at the e+e- International Linear Collider,
the Belle II experiment and the ALPS II experiment at DESY.
At Zeuthen research is also done in the areas of gamma-ray astronomy and astroparticle physics with the observatories CTA, HESS, MAGIC, VERITAS, and Fermi LA and
neutrino astronomy and astroparticle physics with the IceCube Observatory.
At DESY Hamburg theory groups investigate the following topics: elementary particles and their interactions, cosmology and string theory. In Zeuthen the theory of elementary particles and astroparticles is covered. DESY Hamburg hosts a strong computing group.

The activities can be characterized by the following categories :

B1. Physics analysis (software-oriented)
Students join the DESY ATLAS or CMS groups and participate in one of the physics analyses carried out in the areas of electroweak and Higgs physics, standard model measurements, QCD, top physics and searches for new physics. Alternatively they join the DESY Belle II or the International Linear Collider group preparing physics analyses of future data. Students joining the astroparticle groups participate in physics analysis related to high-energy neutrino and gamma-ray emission from astrophysical objects. The B1 students analyse real and/or simulated data and contribute to specific analysis tasks such as optimising the signal to background separation or fitting possible new physics signals to the data.
B2. Data processing (software-oriented)
The students join the same experimental groups as mentioned in B1 but focus more on developing specific software that is needed to effectively perform the physics measurements. The students contribute to the development of algorithms and codes in specific areas such as reconstructing physics objects (particles) from the detector data, event triggering, detector calibration, data quality monitoring and optimal and efficient physics analysis based on the identified particles. A further topic is event simulation.
B3. Development of experimental equipment (hardware-oriented)
Students join experimental groups working on the development of future detectors, e.g. ATLAS and CMS at the High-Luminosity LHC, the ILD, BELLE II, ALPS II, IceCube and CTA. Groups at DESY work on silicon trackers, gaseous detectors, data acquisition systems, and testbeams. The students contribute to laboratory and testbeam setups, prepare and perform test measurements with prototypes, analyse and interpret the measured data.
B4. Research on Accelerators
Students join groups engaged in the development of accelerators. Activities include prototype projects for an e+e- linear collider with an emphasis on superconducting rf cavities and projects for beamline instrumentation and plasma wakefield acceleration. In Zeuthen students can actively participate in the development of the photo injector test facility PITZ.
B5. Theory of Elementary Particles and Astroparticle Physics
Students acquire some elementary insight into topics from the wide spectrum of research carried out in Hamburg at the DESY Hamburg theory group (collider phenomenology, particle cosmology, string theory) and in Zeuthen at the two elementary particle theory groups DESY Zeuthen theory group and NIC institute and the Astroparticle Physics theory group . Depending on previous knowledge, activities typically range from further reading, with discussions of theoretical concepts and research methods, to participation in simple research projects. Students are encouraged to indicate in their application if they have a preference for a particular field of research pursued in the theory groups. Often a minimum pre-knowledge (e.g. from lecture courses or seminars) is required in order to be selected for a project in a particular field.
B6. Computing
At DESY Hamburg students can participate in various areas of scientific computing such as Grid and Cloud, data management (dCache),
high performance (HPC) and GPU, and in infrastructures for analysis.
At Zeuthen students participate also in tests and software development for powerful parallel computers
